Hess Lake is conveniently located 1 mile South of Newaygo and 1 mile East of M 37 in Grant and Brooks Townships in Newaygo County. This very popular West Michigan all sports lake consists of 755 acres of surface waters with reported depths of up to 28 feet.

Hess Lake is home to a nice mix of year round homes and seasonal cottages. Hess Lake has formed a Lake Property Owners Association to care for the condition of the lake and the area. . Over the years there has been consideration of the construction of a community sewer system. An important decision like this can affect the quality of lakefront living for years to come.

On the northwest corner of Hess Lake and 88^th, The Michigan DNR maintains a public access site.  There is plenty of parking, vault toilets and a hard surface boat launch.

Smuggler’s Inn, located directly on the Hess Lake waterfront is a restaurant that offers good home cooking and daily specials.  It can be a relaxing way to enjoy a great meal while taking in the beautiful lake views. At times this restaurant can become very busy, so adjust your schedule accordingly.

Mornings on Michigan’s inland lakes are wonderful opportunities to try to capture the beauty of the sunrise. No two are alike.

Hess Lake, Newaygo Michigan         August 7, 1923 Dear Folks, We arrived safely with a flat tire. Fishing is fine here, caught five bass this morning. Also went for huckleberries. Grandpa sure enjoys fishing. It rained Monday morning, raining a bit now. The boys are anxious to get at fishing again. The big ones bite better at night. Hope all is okay in Grand Rapids. Hess Lake at Maugher's Landing, Newaygo, Michigan         Harriet, We have been here almost a week, the weather has been warm and sunny. Frank is enjoying the new boat, but not catching many fish with it. Rather disappointing. Hard to believe summer is almost over. See you in two weeks, give our greetings to your brothers.
